Editorial Comment:
This is a 217-page report produced after research based on long-line fisheries in Australia, Chile, Fiji, Italy, Peru, South Africa and the USA (Hawai) and describes the long-line fishing gear used and the attempt to manage unwanted bycatch (sea birds, turtles and shark species). The report discusses commercial implications and marketing considerations on the disposal of such unwanted bycatch and attempts at improvements in the gear and bait to limit catch to the target species. The report also mentions the increase in demand for shark meat.
Whilst not directly concerned with our aim and enabling objectives, it does provide for some interesting reading. Some long lines with up to 2500 baited hooks are up to 80-odd kilometers long and are left to an extensive 'soak time' (in the water). The report also researches the survival of the bycatch by species. The awareness level of regulatory demands varied by area and market demand. |
