Pollution Slows Reef Growth

Shark Kills Number 100 milliom Annually
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 02/03/13

Please read the latest 'Article' on this website - see menu item 'Articles'. This is just staggeringly bad news and will only serve to exacerbate the already considerable impact on shark prey species. Besides being the ocean's top predator, the shark is also close to the top of the scavenger list. Together, this predation will result in an ever-increasing 'cascade' impact on both the 'Top-Down' ....

Cartoon - "The Other CO2 Problem"
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 13/06/10

Dr Carol Turley has kindly sent the SCCT a DVD of this cartoon produced by Ridgeway School pupils in conjunction with the Plymouth Marine laboratory. In short, it is a brilliant piece of work and was launched at the International Congress on Climate Change in Copenhagen 2009 followed by a showing at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. In a way that only children can, the cartoon illustrates the ....

'Toothless IPCC and CITES' - Fightback !
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 13/04/10

We are seeking to support the redress of the 'toothless and spineless' nature of these institutions - seen by some as expensive and meaningless talk shops !! The answer may lie in sanctions which damage those whose actions scupper the proceedings - (the proceedings seem doomed to failure before they start !!). We will support any measure brought in to implement these sanctions.

'Toothless' IPCC and CITES - Utter Despair !!
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 29/03/10

Right now, I am feeling at the point of utter despair !! In common with the failed IPCC talks in Copenhagen (and hard on their heels) CITES have proved themselves as another 'Toothless Talking Shop' - both seem to be open to the simplest of political ambushes. The mood is striking me to go out and buy some bluefin tuna sushi (afer a bowl of sharks fin soup), then on to buy a good old 'gas-guzzling' ....

Affiliative Fund-Raising with Hong-Kong-based Shark Rescue (SR)
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) - Secretary SCCT on 16/03/10

We are delighted to support Ran Elfassy and his Hong Kong-based 'Shark Rescue (SR)' organisation in the form of an affiliative fund-raising effort. SR are actively seeking to halt the import of endangered sharks and their fins through the Hong Kong market and have developed some innovative procedures to that end. The procedures enjoy some great strengths and include:

a. The DNA identification ....

Declining Calcification on the Great Barrier Reef
Written by Ava - ReefTank Community Blog on 09/03/10

I am very pleased that ReefTank are reflecting the deterioration of the Great Barrier Reef - almost certainly caused by progessive ocean acidification. With up to 200,000 aquarists monitoring this blog, it is an important means of 'spreading the word' on the need for a reduction in CO2 emissions. The surfeit of atmospheric CO2 is absorbed by the world's oceans creating a dilute form of carbonic acid ....

Shark Fin Nixed !
Written by Ran Elfassy - Shark Rescue on 08/03/10

Shark fin nixed - thanks Stephen!

There is hope. Shark Rescue supporter Stephen Woollard, Critical Environment and Sustainability Manager at Jones Lang LaSalle, proved that lone people can make a huge difference. Woollard convinced the global real estate services firm to stop supporting the shark trade.

Help Holly to get to Hoga !
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 03/03/10

Holly East is a second-year undergraduate at Cambridge University hoping to go to Hoga (Sulawezi,Indonesia) this summer with Operation Wallacea to research biomass levels in relation to proximity to coral reefs. Her research (and dissertation) could prove critical to the creation and location of artificial reefs - in turn, critical to maintaining the existing level of marine biodiversity. She has ....

Ran Elfassy - Shark Rescuer
Written by Hamish Mckenzie (Time Out - Hong Kong) - Feb 2010 on 04/02/10

Hongkonger: Ran Elfassy, shark rescuer
Sharks are very important creatures, but they have terrible PR. As the beasts that swim at the top of the underwater food chain, their very existence is crucial to sustaining the health of marine eco systems – but how often do you hear about that? Instead, we greedy humans gobble them up in massive quantities without a second thought, whether it be in ....

The Hot Planet
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 09/01/10

Another very good BBC TV programme has recently (mid-Dec 2009) been shown entitled, 'The Hot Planet'. It offers a good sequel to the TV documentary 'The Power of the Planet'. I'm not sure whether the BBC intend to produce a video of this programme (part of which concerns the development of 'plastic trees' capable of enhanced CO2 absorption).

Welcome to REEFTANK

We are delighted to have 'on board' David Brocklebank as a SCCT Trustee. His 15 years of maritime experience (and negotiation) will add another dimension to the Trust operations and dovetail in very nicely with the experience of the other Trustee board members. See 'About Us' for more information on David.

The Power of the Planet
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) - 21st Dec 2009 on 21/12/09

There is a very good BBC series entitled, "The Power of the Planet" - - from the SCCT viewpoint, the 'Oceans' section, chapter 4, concerning the Ocean Conveyor, 2 degress and ocean acidification are particularly relevant and provides a backdrop to our concerns for the state of the oceans and their biodiversity. The DVD/CD is available through various suppliers on the internet.

Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change -Dec 2009 - Questions
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) - 27th Nov 2009 on 27/11/09

In the interests of our children, I am wondering whether the delegates will have:

a. The courage to override their own national interest and commercial and industrial pressures.

b. The tenacity to enforce Carbon Capture and Storage

c. The foresight to introduce a hydrogen-based global energy economy to replace the almost-depleted fossil fuel economy.

Kilimanjaro
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 26/11/09

Exciting news - - we have been contacted by Stewart Hayes and Victoria Bovaird who plan to tackle the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro on 1st January 2010. Stewart has generously offered the proceeds of his fundraising to our Trust. We shall be following their efforts closely - the final 5000ft of the ascent could be difficult with low temperatures and anoxia to combat. All best wishes from the SCCT for their ....

Polar Seas Acidification and Impacts
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 11/10/09

The Observer article dated 4th October on polar waters turning progressively acidic summarises why the SCCT is so concerned about ocean acidification. The process inhibits the performance and role of phyto- and zooplankton in coral reef and mollusc shell formation. The reefs provide the breeding and nursery habitat for the procreation and development of so many species and the threat to coral survival ....

Palau - Shark fishing Moratorium
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 25/09/09

What a delight to learn that Palau is to impose an indefinite moratorium on shark fishing in their archipelago waters. This can only serve to improve the health of sub-species and the coral reefs and marine biodiversity in general. The SCCT will monitor and report as significant news arises. Marine tourism will benefit enormously; where else are you likely to find pristine reefs and the same level ....

Icelandic withdrawal from fossil-fuel based economy.
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 13/06/08

In co-operation with other Scandinavian countries, Iceland is now well advanced in the technology drive to distance itself from a carbon fossil fuel based economy.
