Polar Seas Acidification and Impacts Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 11/10/09
The Observer article dated 4th October on polar waters turning progressively acidic summarises why the SCCT is so concerned about ocean acidification. The process inhibits the performance and role of phyto- and zooplankton in coral reef and mollusc shell formation. The reefs provide the breeding and nursery habitat for the procreation and development of so many species and the threat to coral survival is very real and imminent. The article lends a great deal of weight to the argument in favour of the rapid introduction of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) measures. Whilst expensive, the failure to introduce these measures will prove infinitely more expensive in the longer-term. | |
