Shark Fin Nixed !
Written by Ran Elfassy - Shark Rescue on 08/03/10

Shark fin nixed - thanks Stephen!

There is hope. Shark Rescue supporter Stephen Woollard, Critical Environment and Sustainability Manager at Jones Lang LaSalle, proved that lone people can make a huge difference. Woollard convinced the global real estate services firm to stop supporting the shark trade.

"JLL throughout China has now banned the serving of shark fin soup at all its functions," said Stephen. "The company in Hong Kong employs over 4,000 staff and China has nearly 11,000 - this is a major success."

We agree and heartily thank Stephen for taking the initiative to cause such a major impact. You can also thank Stephen by sending him an email.

Or thank Jones Lang LaSalle for being a learning organisation by writing JLL's China office (select China as the country location): contact

This is HUGE.

You may remember an article published in The Standard. From it, we learned that researchers from the US tracked back the species of shark fins being sold by Hong Kong's shark fin traders. A whopping 21% of fins tested were from endangered sharks. This is a big deal, if you consider that the city is the world's leading trader of shark fin.

Shark Rescue is partnering with Hong Kong legal experts, police officers, scientists and more to see what can be done. The legal platform and the rule of law are in place to clamp down on the trade, so stay tuned to find out how we're doing!

Editorial Note: This is really effective action in the effort to stem the import of shark fins through the Hong-Kong market. We are hoping to arrange closer ties with Shark Rescue in the coming weeks in a joint fund-raising effort to provide the action with more 'clout' !
