Affiliative Fund-Raising with Hong-Kong-based Shark Rescue (SR)
Written by Monty Halls (Senior) - Secretary SCCT on 16/03/10

We are delighted to support Ran Elfassy and his Hong Kong-based 'Shark Rescue (SR)' organisation in the form of an affiliative fund-raising effort. SR are actively seeking to halt the import of endangered sharks and their fins through the Hong Kong market and have developed some innovative procedures to that end. The procedures enjoy some great strengths and include:

a. The DNA identification of shark species and source (from shark fins only where needed).

b Building cases for the criminal prosecution of traders in endangered shark species via the DNA identification (and liaising closely with police and investigative authorities).

c. Lobbying local parliamentary authorities.

d. Seeking the support of restaurant chains, hotel chains etc (already one such chain (with 15,000 employees) have stopped serving sharks fin soup at their celebratory events !)).

e. Gaining the optimum media exposure for their cause.

Ran has created his first 'Justgiving' website with the address: http://www.justgiving.com/shark-rescue against the background hope of gaining help with the expenditure involved in these procedures.

The SCCT strongly supports the SR measures and will give 75% of their SR-initiated Justgiving websites directly to them. This measure will enable the SCCT to concentrate more time and resources to the vast problems associated with ocean acidification and the attendant reduction in the oceanic 'calcification' processes. This will demand a considerable scientific research effort. We are encouraged to see a progressive change of attitude as the uncomfortable truth dawns about this insidious and pernicious threat to our oceans, their biodiversity and, ultimately, our own marine food supplies!!

Please help Shark Rescue with their thoroughly laudable efforts by giving a donation to their Justgiving website.

Thanks

Monty Halls (Senior)
