Cartoon - "The Other CO2 Problem" Written by Monty Halls (Senior) on 13/06/10
Dr Carol Turley has kindly sent the SCCT a DVD of this cartoon produced by Ridgeway School pupils in conjunction with the Plymouth Marine laboratory. In short, it is a brilliant piece of work and was launched at the International Congress on Climate Change in Copenhagen 2009 followed by a showing at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. In a way that only children can, the cartoon illustrates the 'capillary' impact of ocean acidification on marine life extending from phytoplankton up through the food chain to walruses - - and, maybe even more importantly, to you and I !! The production must offer a huge help to Primary schools interested in conveying to the 5 - 10 year-old age group the insidious and pernicious threat that ocean acidification poses to all marine life and human marine food supplies. The cartoon can be accessed via the internet - just type in 'The Other CO2 Problem' on the Google search engine. Dr Turley agrees with the SCCT that the widest possible dissemination of the information should be sought. With this in mind and to complement this excellent production, the SCCT is trying to produce two cartoons with the optimum distribution (maybe to include other language versions) by professional cartoon-makers (Aardman Animation of 'Wallace and Gromit' fame is one possibility). We are receiving support from the PML, DEFRA, English Nature and other conservation bodies for this project. We still need sponsorship from any organisation with an eye to the future for a subject matter described by DEFRA as "- - -the societal issue of the 21st Century" and would love to hear from any such sponsors. In the meantime, we are pressing ahead as hard as we can and will devote a substantial proportion of our own resources to the effort. |
